Abstract

The condensation reactions of [2+2] carbohydrazide or thiocarbohydrazide with 3,4-hexanedione in a (1:1) molar ratio in aqueous solution at room temperature resulted in the formation of the novel Schiff bases tetraimine, macrocyclic ligands (L1) : 2,3,9,10-Tetraethyl-6,13-dione-1,4,5,7,8,11,12,14-octaaza-cyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene and (L2):2,3,9,10-Tetraethyl– 6,13 –dithione-1,4,5,7,8,11,12,14-octaaza-cyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene. Mononuclear complexes with the compositions [Co(L1)Cl2]. 3H2O; [M(L2)] Cl2.nH2 (M = Ni (II), Cu (II) or Zn (II); n = 0 when M = Zn (II) and n = 3 when M = Ni (II) or Cu(II)) ; [M(L2)Cl2]. nH; (M=Co (II), Ni (II) or Cu (II); n=0 when M=Ni (II) and n=2 when M= Co (II) or Cu (II)); and also [Zn(L2)] Cl2.H2O were obtained by reacting metal (II) chlorides with the ligand (L1) or (L2) in (1:1) molar ratio in ethanol. Mass and infrared spectral techniques suggest the structural features of 14-membered [2+2] Schiff base macrocyclic ligands while the nature of bonding and the stereochemistry of the complexes have been deduced by elemental contents analyses molar conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, MS and electronic spectral studies. The magnetic moments and electronic spectral data suggested a coordination number six (octahedral geometry) for the [Co(L1)Cl2]. 3H2O; [M(L1)] Cl2.nH2O and [Zn(L2)] Cl2.H2O complexes while the [M(L2)Cl2]. nH2O; are of four coordinated geometry (tetrahedral).
